Are you a Woodsworth student?
Do you like attending WCSA events? Do you take advantage of, or are interested in the plethora of services we have to offer? Are you part of a WCSA funded club? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then the following information affects you!
In the past 15 years, there has never once been an increase to the student fee used by WCSA. Woodworth College students 15 years ago paid just as much as students do now in 2014: $7.50 per semester. However, despite this identical fee, there are two important distinctions to keep in mind. First- inflation. $7.50 30 years ago went a lot further than it does now, as prices have risen across the board. Additionally, WCSA was a fraction of the size back then as it was now, in terms of events, services, clubs, etc. There are many more initiatives to fund today, as well as many more students to accommodate. To illustrate: this past Orientation week, we had more than 750 students involved, which is more than double the amount just three years prior!
But what does all this information mean? How does this affect you, the Woodsworth student? The answer is simple: if WCSA continues to grow at this rate, coupled with inflation, the Association will be forced to scrap many of these aforementioned events and initiatives. WCSA will not have enough money to operate at its current capacity in the future.
This is why we are asking the Woodsworth undergraduate population to increase the WCSA student fee: to keep WCSA going. With a modest fee increase of just $2.50 per fall and winter semester (which is less than the equivalent of giving up one tall latte per year from Starbucks!), WCSA would receive another $30,000 annually. This would be enough to keep funding all of WCSA’s ever-expanding portfolios, maintain our in-office services, and fund our clubs going into the future. Additionally, special projects that that many students have expressed interest in, such as a more commuter-friendly student lounge, could move forward. Lastly, by tying WCSA’s student fee to the Consumer Price Index, commonly known as inflation, the fee would be adjusted accordingly each year, to keep it up to date.
Now, what are the specifics of this fee increase? The following two questions will be the questions asked of you during WCSA’s general elections period:
1. Do you agree to tie the Woodsworth College Students’ Association (WCSA) student fee to the Consumer Price Index (CPI)?
2. Do you agree to raise the fall and winter Woodsworth College Students’ Association (WCSA) student fee from $7.50 per term to $10.00 per term?
Thank you for your time, and remember: let’s keep WCSA going!
